Barbara Everett Heintz –will
discuss her new book "Pink honeysuckle”., part-autobiographical,
part-fictional memoir about life in southern Appalachia and the
migration away from it during the mid-twentieth century. Ms. Heintz
account complements her brother's preface in the first part of the
book; it gives her perspective of a girl growing up as the fifth of
eight children in the same family. She describes her ongoing
domestic chores that began daily at 4 am and that expanded, in
adolescence, into Nanning and maid work for other families. Most
riveting are her terrifying experiences in the care of sexually
abusive family members. Among other difficulties of growing up in
her family the author notes, understatedly, the physical handicap
that she had to overcome in not receiving appropriate medical
treatment for her crossed eyes.
Even though the author's had many hardships to bear,
she shares the many moments of intermittent triumph. This is a must
read you will come away with a true understanding of how she
overcame adversity and found happiness and the love of life.
